I spent my early years growing up in 4H. My journey started with a lot of lessons in english, western and jumping. Showing horses back-to-back shows all summer long as teenager inspired my journey to share my knowledge and love of horseback riding with special needs students.

1978-1979: I became a PATH certified instructor with a Midland MI Theraputic riding group, before moving to Charlevoix.

1982-1983: The Exceptional Riders Program was started at Lake Charlevoix Farms. After becoming incorporated with the help of people who believed in the Theraputic riding program, a board of directors was formed. Becoming a donation and volunteer supported program.

1984-present: The exceptional riders program has become a stronger program striving to continue serving the needs of the surrounding counties of Charlevoix, Emmet, and northern Antrim county free of charge.

Heather joined Exceptional Riders in 2017. I have always been loved being around horses and was so happy to find Exceptional Riders. I have been a sidewalker, leader and am now an instructor working on my certification. I enjoy seeing the students build strength and confidence with every lesson. Seeing them smile and enjoy their time with the horses is why I volunteer!

Laura Richards I earned a CDA in Early Childhood Development and taught Preschool while my children were growing up. I’ve worked as a medical assistant and currently work in the dental field. Children and animals have always held a special place in my heart and have been a large part of my life. My daughter and I started horseback riding when she was in grade school so we could have a shared interest.
Living in Northern Michigan allows me the opportunity to enjoy nature at it’s best. Whether it’s hiking, bird watching, gardening or walking the beaches.
To be able to be involved in the Exceptional Riders Program allows me to help children and work with horses. What could be better?
